Tyrone retained the Ulster SFC title with a comfortable win over Monaghan at Clones.

The Farney men, seeking their first provincial title since 1988, failed to rise to the occasion in front of 34,634 fans on their own home patch.

The vastly experienced Red Hands controlled the game once they got through a closely fought opening 20 minutes.

Yet they needed two stunning saves from Pascal McConnell to keep them in front in the first half.

Ten different players scored for the defending champions, with the Cavanagh bothers leading the way, Sean on three points, and Colm with the only goal of the game in the 65th minute

McConnell rescued Tyrone with two brilliant first half saves from the Freeman brothers.

First he denied Tommy in the fourth minute, when the Magheracloone attacker got in behind to collect a long delivery from Owen Lennon.

And in the dying moments of the half, he pulled off what will surely be a contender for save of the season, diving full length to keep out a stinging shot from wing back Damien.

In between, the sides were level on four occasions, before the Red Hands pulled away as the interval approached.

Tommy Freeman and Paul Finlay were on target for the Farney men, with Tommy McGuigan and centre back Conor Gormley responding with Tyrone points.

All of the Red Hands half backs registered in that first half, with Davy Harte and Philip Jordan also venturing forward to score.

It was Jordan who brought the teams level in the 22nd minute at 0-4 each, and the defending champions reeled off three points, through Sean Cavanagh, Kevin Hughes and Harte to go in at the break with a 0-7 to 0-4 cushion.

Matin Penrose and Sean Cavanagh stretched the advantage as gaps began to open up in the Farney defence early in the second half.

Monaghan suffered a further blow when full back JP Mone was stretchered off on 45 minutes.

Tyrone used their vast experience to squeeze their opponents out of the game.
Monaghan went 40 minutes without registering a score, until Conor McManus tapped over a 13 metre free in the 59th minute.

But that wasn’t enough to spark a revival. The Red Hands turned the screw and Colm Cavanagh charged through to drill home a brilliant goal.

Tyrone clinically finished the job off with late points from Harte, Penrose and Hughes.
