The motion to introduce the 'mark’ in gaelic football failed to receive the necessary backing at the GAA Annual Congress on Friday night.

The ‘mark’, which was one of a number of rule changes trialled during the Allianz National League, failed to get the support of delegates in Newcastle, Co Down, and will not be retained for this summer's Championship.

A second experimental rule relating to the hand pass has been shelved after a motion for its introduction on a permanent basis failed to be carried.

The proposed change to the 'square ball' rule in football was also shot down.

However, the penalty rule change has been carried, meaning penalty kicks will now be taken from 11 metres following a successful trial in the Allianz League.
