Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has expressed surprise that the GAA has changed its ruling on how teams will be relegated from the National Leagues this year.
Prior to this season, scoring averages were used to decide which team would be relegated if both teams finished level on points. This season if two teams finish on level points, then their head-to-head meetings will be used to differentiate between the two sides.
The only exception to this rule is if three teams or more finish on level points then scoring averages will be used to separate the sides.
After Tyrone’s victory over Kerry in Healy Park, Omagh, Tyrone manager Harte said: ‘That must be a new rule then.
‘So, they tell us when the season is over? That’s unreal, that we are playing games of that nature and that our season depends on something that nobody has actually told us about.’
The new ruling may affect Tyrone directly. If they finish level on points with Monaghan, in the relegation zone, then Tyrone will be relegated due to the Farney Men beating Harte’s side earlier in March.
If Tyrone, Monaghan and Derry all finish level on points, then their points difference will be used to decide who stays in Division One.
