The death has taken place of Mick Higgins the last survivng member of the Cavan team that won the All-Ireland football title in the Polo Grounds, New York in 1947.
Higgins, who was 87, was born in New York and returned to his mother's home town of Kilnaleck in County Cavan at five years of age.
He made his Ulster championship debut in 1943 against Monaghan, and won the first of his provincial honours in that same year.
Higgins was on the Breffni side that retained the All-Ireland title in 1948, and claimed his third Celtic Cross in 1952 when he was captain.
Higgins was regarded as one of the finest players of
all time in the GAA but was not named on the team
of the Millenium.
He was much in demand for coaching and managing
throughout Ulster following his retirement.
He was also a keen follower of greyhound racing and
was a former Garda seargant.
