Liam Sammon has resigned as Galway football manager after confirming his decision to decline an offer to take up the option of a third year in charge.
Sammon, who took over from Peter Forde in late 2007, met with the players and the County Board last night to inform them of his decision.
Speaking to www.hoganstand.com, Galway PRO Seamus Finnerty confirmed: ‘Liam held a meeting with the players and county board officials to inform them of his decision.
‘He had another year of a three-year term to run, but decided not to take up that option. I'd like to thank him for all his work with the team over the past two years and wish him well in the future.’
Galway lost the Connacht final to Mayo in July and exited the Championship a week later in the qualifiers to Donegal. The Tribesmen were knocked out of the 2008 Championship at the quarter-final stage by Kerry in an epic encounter at rain-soaked Croke Park.
