Protests may put quarter-finals in jeopardy

Will the new pitch at Croke Park be ready in time for the weekend?

This weekend's All-Ireland Senior Football quarter-finals could be in jeopardy due to protests outside Croke Park by local residents.

Residents staged a blockade outside the stadium from late last night, preventing workers from entering to dismantle U2's stage in protest over the intrusion caused by extensive works to host U2's three concerts.

The residents relented this morning and allowed four trucks through in order to begin the dismantling, but it is unknown whether they plan any further action.

There are concerns that if the stage is not dismantled in time, they will not be able to re-sod the pitch in time for the weekend's fixtures.

However, stadium director Peter McKenna is confident that the game will go ahead as planned.

'It is disappointing that they have decided to go public with their protests,' he said.

'We have tried to engage in dialogue before and after the concerts and the effect of their protests will be that it will be louder now for longer.'
