Galway 1-14 2-12 Mayo

Familiar foes Galway and Mayo go head-to-head at Pearse Stadium in the Connacht SFC final, follow all the actions as it happens with our match-tracker.

There's really very little to chose between the two teams, Mayo will be hoping to claim a measure of revenge on Galways for last year's Connacht final defeat but even the bookmakers can't seperate the sides.

min: A packed Pearse Park is bathed in sunlight - for now - and referee John Bannon gets things underway. Galway's Nicky Joyce tries his luck from from a tight angle but his effort comes back off the upright and is cleared to safety.

mins: David Heany opens the scoring for Mayo after some patient build-up play creates the space for him to slot the ball over from close range.

mins: Aiden Kilcoyne doubles his side's lead with a wonderful point, this has been a very bright and lively start from Mayo, who appear to be eager to prove a point.

mins: Kilcoyne goes agonisingly close to claiming the game's first goal after he picks a high-ball out of the sky, makes himself a yard of space and just drags his shot wide. Galway will consider themselves lucky.

mins: Niall Coleman hits a wide for Galway after being forced to take a snap-shoot at the posts. Mayo aren't giving an inch at the back.

mins: Nicky Joyce, who comes back into the starting line-up after being dropped for disciplinary reasons, proves his worth after shrugging off the attentions of two defenders before tapping over Galway's first score of the day.

mins: Joyce evens things up with a fine long-range score.

mins: After a shaky start, Galway are forcing themselves into the game, taking more of a hold in the centre of the pitch.

mins: Both sides are looking nervous with plenty of slips and handling mistakes, but Heany wriggles free of the attentions of Galway's Declan Meehan and fists over from just under the sticks. The goal chance was there if he wanted it.

mins: Galway's veteran Padraig Joyce is played in by Michael Meehan and is left with the simplest of tap-overs to level things up.

mins: Mayo's Aidan O'Shea restores his side's lead with a powerful surging run that takes him clear of the Galway defence and allows him to slot the ball over.

mins: Pat Harte is inches away from finding the net. A neat piece of play leaves him in space in the centre and his powerful shot canons of the crossbar and goes over for a point.

mins: Nice spot by the referee who penalises Joyce for pulling on Trevor Howley's arm.

mins: Mayo goal! Barry Moran times his run to perfection to get on the end of a hopeful long ball from Ronan McGarrity, which looked like a point attempt to be honest, and fists to the back of the net.

mins: This is lovely stuff from Mayo. They're restricting Galway to snap shots and half-chances and up the other end their forwards are giving Galway the run-around. Alan Dillon gets his name on the scoresheet with another fine team point.

mins: Michael Meehan claims his team's first score in 10 minutes but is made to work hard for it and his angled shot from the left just creeps over.

mins: Nicky Joyce strikes his side's second wide after being pushed out to the left flank by the Mayos back - the Tribesmen are having no joy down the middle.

mins: Nicky Joyce taps over from just under the posts after being played in by cousin Padraig who capitalises on a rare mistake in the Mayo defence. Again though, the goal was at his mercy.

mins: Another point for Joyce drags Galway to within three points of Mayo. The Tribesmen are enjoying their best patch of the game. Aidan O'Shea has left the pitch to have his contact lenses attended to and Galway have been making the most of the man advantage.

mins: Trevor Mortimer becomes the sixth Mayo forward to score. He uses all his strength to hold off the attentions of Gary Sice and strikes a sweet shot over the bar.

mins: McGarrity hits a wonderful long range point to has just enough legs to drop over the bar.

mins: Mayo fans are given a scare as McGarrity, playing despite suffering a broken jaw in a club game three weeks ago, takes a blow to the face, however, after taking a moment to catch his breath he's fit to continue.

+ 2 mins: Dillon hits another fine point. Holding off his marker as he charges forward, he uses to space made by Mortimer's dummy run before turning to lob over a fine score.

+ 3 mins: Nicky Brennan ensure Galway are trailing by five points at the break after converting what was a generous free-kick.

Half-time - Galway 0-07 1-09 Mayo. Mayo are well worth their lead, and aside from a 10 minute spell midway through the half, have controlled things. Their defence is playing particularly well, restricting Galway's chances and with all their forwards on the scoresheet, manager John O'Mahoney will be a happy man at the break.

mins: The game restarts with Galway now playing with the wind at their backs. They've been second best so far and will need to improve drastically if they're to stand a chance.

mins: Padraig Joyce's freekick from the right side drifts just wide, it's been a scrappy start to the second half.

mins: Galway try to play too much football at the back allowing halftime substitute Conor Mortimer to intercept the ball and tap over.

mins: Padraig Joyce again kicks wide after Trevor Howley puts him under pressure and forces him to fluff his kick. Paul Conroy then follows that up with a wild effort from just inside the Mayo half that goes wide.

mins: I've said it before, but it bears repeating - Mayo are defending wonderfully. Padraig Joyce and Michael Meehan aren't getting a moments peace.

mins: Nicky Joyce claims his sixth point of the afternoon from a freekick, and dead-balls appear to be Galways best hope of scoring.

mins: Andy Moran fouls Galway's Coleman allowing Nicky Joyce to add to his already impressive points total, and reduce Mayo's lead to four points.

mins: Mayo have gone a bit flat. They're still defending stoutly but it isn't happening for them up front and Mortimer hits a wide from the kind of position that Mayo were scoring in the first half.

mins: Galway's Sean Armstrong hits his side's fourth wide of the second half with a wild effort.

mins: Michael Meehan reduces Mayo's lead to just three points with another well taken freekick. Mayo are a shadow of the side that dominated the first half and have given up all the momentum to Galway, scoring just one point in 22 minutes.

mins: Diarmuid Blake gives away a freekick by fouling Aidan O'Shea just underneath the posts which Conor Mortimer taps over for Mayo.

mins: Mayo goal! Conor Mortimer gets on the end of a lovely weighted pass from his namesake Trevor to fist the ball to the net. Trevor will take all the plaudits for his surging run and intelligent pass, and that should be the score that decides the game.

mins: Galway, aren't giving up as Michael Meehan kicks a sweet freekick, but it's goals and not points that the Tribesmen need now.

mins: And Meehan does his best to find the net. He takes a wonderful catch under pressure and blasts the ball with he weaker left foot but Mayo goalkeeper Kenneth O'Malley does well to turn the ball around the posts.

mins: Mayo appear happy to sit back and invite Galway on, which is dangerous at any time. Armstrong's snatched shot finds the mark and goes over for a point to reduce Mayo's lead to five points.

mins: Nicky Joyce, who has been head and shoulders above everyone else in a Galway jersey, makes a rare mistake hitting his freekick from 45 yards out wide.

mins: Joyce makes no mistake this time, his point from play again makes it a three point game. It's all one-way traffic as wave after wave of Galway attacks are invited on.

+ 1 mins: Mark Ronaldson gives away a foolish freekick, which is quickly taken by Galway's Bergin before being cleared to safety.

+ 2 mins: Galway goal! It's been coming. Mayo are trying to play keep ball but foolishly give away possesion on the half-way line. Michael Meehan takes a high ball, shrugs off his marker and hits the ball low and hard to the net to level things up!

+ 3 mins: Peadar Gardiner may have just written his name into Mayo folklore with a measured shot from 25 yards out that floats over the bar.

Full time: Gardiner's point proves to be the last action of the game, as the delirious Mayo fans charge onto the pitch to celebrate with their team. O'Mahoney's men got out of jail there after sitting back and inviting on so much pressure - brilliant and totally dominant in the first half, they should count themselves lucky to have won on the back of their second half display.
