Former All-Ireland winner Mike McCarthy is said to be poised to end his inter-county retirement and make a dramatic return to the Kerry senior football squad.
The full back quit the panel aged 27 after the 2006 All-Ireland triumph but still plays for his club Kilcummin.
McCarthy has in the past ignored requests to return to the county panel but now seems to have had a change of heart and is ready to answer manager Jack O’Connor’s call and resume training with the squad.
O’Connor is expected to make major changes following his side’s Munster defeat at the hands of Cork leaving the door open for a possible return for McCarthy in the All-Ireland qualifiers.
