With Dublin's match postponed, Monaghan moved two points clear at the top of Division 2 by overcoming Meath at Scotstown this afternoon.

An 11th-minute goal from Paul Finlay had Monaghan on the right track and Meath were poor in the first half, shooting just one point from play.

Cian Ward kicked three frees for the Royals who trailed by 1-07 to 0-04 at the break.

Despite losing JP Mone to injury, Monaghan won out with Vincent Corey and Stephen Gollogly adding their names to the scoresheet.

This was Meath manager Colm Coyle's first game back in Monaghan since he quit as Farney boss in 2004, although he did get one over on his old team when the Royals won 3-10 to 0-12 in last year's Division 2 semi-finals at Croke Park.

There was a 15-minute delay to this game to allow all supporters to gain access to the small ground before the throw-in. The tie was switched to the St. Mary's pitch due to poor playing conditions at Clones.

Monaghan boss Seamus McEnaney made a late change with Stephen Gollogly taking over from Raymond Ronaghan at full-forward.

Joe Sheridan was passed fit to start at centre-forward for Meath, who had Seamus Kenny lining out at left corner back instead of Cormac McGill.

It was predictably the hosts who settled the quicker. Neat interplay between the forwards led to Conor McManus laying off for Finlay to find the back of the Meath net.

Thomas Freeman and Vincent Corey were used in a two-man full-forward line and the latter had a productive first half, ending it with four points.

Rory Woods, who claimed the game's first point and operated between the forty and the square, was a big influence for Monaghan and he provided assists for a number of points for his team-mates.

Stephen Bray had replied to Woods' opener but Meath struggled in open play and lived off frees from Ward for the remainder of the half.

Peadar Byrne and Graham Geraghty both fluffed chances while Ward hit the post when a goal looked on.

Dick Clerkin and Eoin Lennon both had fine games in the Monaghan midfield, but Meath, the defending champions, found an extra gear on the restart.

After Ward had pointed an early free, they missed out on another potential goal when Bray had his effort saved by Monaghan stopper Padraig McBennett.

Woods continued to be a menace as he drew defenders and set up points for Corey and Gollogly, while Lennon also raided forward to slam over from 30 metres out.

Subsequent white flags from Ward and Graham Reilly cut the gap to five points but that is how it stayed as Monaghan managed their unbeaten run in the league, posting their fourth win in all.
