Monaghan had a rewarding first day out in Allianz NFL Division Two as they put Roscommon to the sword at Clones.

All-Star Thomas Freeman hit 0-08 for Monaghan, while Paul Finlay (0-04) and Conor McManus (0-03) also made valuable contributions.

The hosts were 0-11 to 1-02 ahead at half-time despite leaking a ninth-minute goal to Conor Devaney.

Cathal Cregg and Karol Mannion kept Roscommon competitive, although they did have midfielder Seamus O'Neill sent off. A goal from substitute Daniel McNally wrapped it up for the Ulster men.

Roscommon blooded four league debutants, all from their successful All-Ireland minor winning side, but Monaghan proved far too strong, particularly in midfield and around the half-forwards.

It took the Farney men just 32 seconds to open the scoring with Finlay finding his range and the Ballybay clubman added another point in the fifth-minute.

Freeman, finding plenty of space close to the Roscommon goal, angled over his first point soon after but the Rossies signalled their intent when youngster Devaney bulged the home side's net.

It was the high point of a forgettable display by John Maughan's side. Enda Kenny snaffled the ball on the deck, poking it forward beyond three Monaghan defenders to Cregg who squeezed through a pass for Devaney to beat newcomer Padraig McBennett in the home goal.

But Monaghan recovered quickly from that setback to score points through Freeman and Gary McQuaid as they moved 0-06 to 1-00 ahead, midway through the first half.

By the end of the half, Freeman had four points to his name, Finlay three, while McManus and Raymond Ronaghan, who has been recalled after missing the 2007 season, also added their names to the scoresheet.

Roscommon's two points in the first 35 minutes came from Senan Kilbride and the experienced Mannion, who fisted over with great aplomb.

The recently recalled Frankie Dolan was on the bench for the visitors today but Maughan kept the enigmatic forward in reserve.

After O'Neill's dismissal for a second yellow card - a trip on the advancing McManus - Monaghan eased home with three points from Freeman nudging them 0-14 to 1-04 clear.

McNally's late goal perhaps put a flattering gloss on the final scoreline but there is no denying that Monaghan mean business and have a very definite target of gaining promotion.

Speaking afterwards, Monaghan manager Seamus McEnaney said: ‘It was good to get so many points on the board, but at times our performance was disappointing because we gave Roscommon two or three goal chances and they took one of them.

‘This is a great division to be in for Monaghan as we are playing some great counties like Armagh and Dublin, and we have local derbies against Cavan and Meath. These will be some brilliant games ahead.’
