Jim Greene, the former Waterford and Mount Sion star, has been confirmed as Carlow senior hurling manager.

Carlow County Board announced his appointment at a County Board meeting on Friday night, with Greene taking up the post with immediate affect.

Greene attended last Saturday's senior hurling semi-final replay involving St Mullin's and Naomh Brid.

Former Carlow and Wexford senior football manager Cyril Hughes has been confirmed as one of Greene's backroom team.

Further appointments will be announced over the coming weeks.

Greene, who will be appointing his own physical trainer, is highly enthusiastic about his new appointment.

'I have been watching Carlow's under-age progress with interest. They have been hugely impressive over the past few years, with lots of talent to work with,' he said.

'Hopefully we will bring this forward with the national league our first priority. Then we'll have our sights on the Christy Ring Trophy.'

Meanwhile, former Meath manager Eamonn Barry is expected to be announced as manager of the Carlow senior football team over the coming week.
