Kildare senior football manager John Crofton has resigned his position with immediate effect, citing family commitments as the reason behind his decision.

Crofton has been in charge of the Lillywhites since 2005, but endured a mixed season this year.

Kildare fell at the first hurdle in the Leinster championship going down to neighbours Meath. In the qualifiers they edged past Roscommon, before Louth dumped them out of the competition.

The Lillywhites also reached the semi-finals of the National League, before eventual winners Donegal sent them packing.
