Football quarter-final draw explained

The draw for this year’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals will take place at Croke Park on Sunday 29 July with the provincial champions set to meet the four third-round qualifier winners.

This is the first time in three years that a quarter-final draw will take place.

In 2005 and 2006, the pairings for the quarter-finals were preordained along provincial lines, meaning that the beaten provincial finalists were kept on the same side of the draw as the county which won the provincial title.

For 2007, the draw will take place with the provincial winners (Dublin, Kerry, Sligo and Tyrone in one bowl) and the third-round qualifier winners (Cork or Louth, Galway or Meath, Laois or Derry and Donegal or Monaghan in the other).

The draw is open with one exception – teams that met in the provincial final cannot face each other again in the quarter-final.

For example, if Galway defeat Meath in their third round qualifier tie, they cannot be drawn against Sligo in the quarter-final, as both sides met in the Connacht final.

However, teams that met earlier in the provincial championship can be paired together again. Should Donegal win their qualifier against Monaghan, they could be drawn to face Tyrone. Both sides faced each other in the Ulster semi-final on 17 June.

The pairings for the All Ireland semi-final are preordained with the Sligo v qualifier and Tyrone v qualifier on one side of the draw -and Kerry v qualifier and Dublin v qualifier on the other.
