Sligo won through to their first Connacht SFC final since 2002 with a superb second half display as they downed hosts Roscommon at Hyde Park.

Having gone 2-04 to 0-04 behind, the Yeats men managed to outscore Roscommon by 0-09 to 0-01 over the closing half an hour to claim a place in the 8 July decider against Galway or Leitrim.

Roscommon captain Karol Mannion blasted to the net, two minutes before half-time, to help his side to a 1-03 to 0-04 interval lead.

Cathal Cregg also goaled in the 37th minute but Sligo, with Eamonn O'Hara and their half-forward line in outstanding form, came good thanks to some assured point-taking.

Given that Sligo had not beaten Roscommon in a Connacht Championship tie since 1997, Tommy Breheny's side had plenty to prove but they set about their task well with Kieran Quinn and Mark Breheny (free) putting the visitors 0-02 to 0-00 ahead.

Breheny struck his county's third point before the Rossies belatedly got off the mark in the 13th minute when Ger Heneghan landed a free after a foul on the returning Gary Cox.

By this stage former All Star winning midfielder O'Hara, who shrugged off a hamstring injury to start, was dominating at centre-field.

However, once Roscommon's midfield combination of Seamus O'Neill and Michael Finneran got their share of ball, John Maughan's men looked capable of causing some real damage.

They managed to square up the game and then got in for their opening goal in the 33rd minute when possession was garnered and Cox and Heneghan combined to set up Mannion for a low, measured strike.

Sean Davey, who was lively throughout, then cut the deficit to two points with a well-struck point - ending a fruitless period in front of goal for the Yeats men - before the half-time whistle.

When wing-forward Cregg drove past Sligo goalkeeper Philip Greene just two minutes after the restart, and Heneghan tagged on a point, the Rossies were two goals to the good and odds-on to make the final.

It was certainly a test of character for a Sligo side that had 18 points to spare over New York last time out. Yet they rose to the challenge to produce one of their best halves of football in recent memory.

Their half-forward line of Brian Curran, Breheny and Sean Davey were a constant threat and the likes of Paul McGovern and O'Hara never stopped working, covering every blade of grass.

Sligo's half-forwards contributed nine points in all, six in the second half with Curran cracking over three inspirational scores.

Roscommon's advantage was down to three points by the 43rd minute.

Three minutes later Cox landed his first and only point of the encounter and incredibly, that proved to be the home side's final score of a well-contested semi-final.

Three points on the bounce from the buoyant Sligo attack made it a one point game and with 12 minutes remaining, substitute Kenneth Sweeney stepped up to level the tie at 0-11 to 2-05.

The Rossies were flagging as Sligo continued to press for scores.

Centre-forward Breheny, younger brother of team manager Tommy, nudged his side in front with an excellent 50-yard point.

Injury-time came and Curran provided the clinching score which sets Sligo up for a deserved shot at the Connacht crown.

Galway or Leitrim, who meet next weekend, will be Sligo's opponents next month as they seek to bridge a 32-year gap, having last been provincial champions in 1975.
