John O'Mahony's second spell as Mayo manager got off to a losing start as Sligo IT swept to a surprising 1-10 to 0-09 Connacht FBD League win at Ballinode.
Including nine starters from last year's All-Ireland final, O'Mahony's charges moved 0-4 to 0-2 ahead at half-time, but they were overrun in the second half.
Aidan Campbell opened the scoring for the Connacht champions with a ninth-minute point, while the students got off the mark six minutes later through Alan Costello.
On 50 minutes, point-scorer Michael Mullin rattled a Sligo IT post with a piledriver, but the tie turned in the hosts' favour two minutes later when ironically, Andy Moran hit his native county's net.
Another Mayo panellist playing for the college, Barry Regan took his tally to 0-3 soon after - a haul matched by Donegal star Michael Doherty.
