Meath footballer Graham Geraghty looks to begin a career in politics after he was announced among the nominees for the Fine Gael seat in Meath West.

Geraghty, who represented Ireland in the recent International Rules Series against Australia, is attempting to move into the political arena after an often controversial football career.

Despite coming out poorly in the November opinion polls, the 1999 All-Ireland winning Meath captain is determined to resurrect a fighting spirit within the Fine Gael party as they look to make a serious challenge in the next General Election.

Five nominations for Fine Gael's Meath West selection convention were announced at a Meath West officer board meeting on Monday. The four other candidates are Damien English TD, Meath County Councillor Peter Higgins, Trim Town Councillor Ray Butler and former Meath County Councillor Gerry Gibney.
