Meath's Joe Sheridan scored a brilliant late winning goal to give Leinster a second successive M Donnelly Interprovincial football triumph in Boston as they defeated Connacht by 2-14 to 2-11.

The crowd of around 5,000 that turned up a Canton GAA ground were treated to a thrilling second half, hugely competitive right up to the point when Sheridan blasted the winner.

Derek Savage drilled home a sixth minute goal for a 1-1 to 0-1 lead, but John O'Mahony's side failed to add to that score for almost half an hour.

Leinster responded almost immediately with a Marc Carpenter finish. Joe Sheridan's threaded pass sent midfielder Padraig Clancy clear. When his (Clancy's) shot came off the underside of the crossbar, Carpenter was on hand to finish from close range.

Alan  Dillon and Conor Mortimer pulled back a couple of scores, but all three of Connacht's first-half scores had come from frees, as they turned around looking at a 1-9 to 1-3 deficit.

But the westerners raised their game on the restart, knocking back the deficit to a manageable three points within seven minutes, with Dillon, Mortimer and substitute Karl Mannion all on target after Meehan had converted a '45.

And after Mortimer landed a gem, his Mayo colleague David Heaney charged through from the back to make it a one point game, 1-10 to 1-9, after 50 minutes.

Connacht turned the screw with a Meehan goal 10 minutes from the end, Meehan shooting low past Gary Connaughton after Mannion had squeezed through the killer pass.

But Leinster sealed it with a 68th minute goal, blasted home by full-forward Joe Sheridan from Keaney's route one delivery.
