Two Kerry legends lit up proceedings at the Goal Challenge at the Austin Stack Park in Tralee last night as Kerry fans bade farewell to Seamus Moynihan, but it was Maurice Fitzgerald who inspired South Kerry to a 4-13 to 5-04 victory.
An emotional Moynihan thus ended a career that started way back in 1992 against Clare in the Munster Final at the age of 19. That game ended in a disastrous defeat for Kerry, as Moynihan lined up with Maurice Fitzgerald and the great Jack O’Shea.
Moynihan went on to capture every honour in the game including four All- Ireland senior titles, three National League titles, nine Munster Championship titles, four Sigerson Cup medals and one Railway Cup.
'I have decided to call it a day,' admitted Moynihan. 'You cant keep going on forever but at the end of the day, I have no regrets. It's great to go out on a winning note and last Sunday week was sweet.'
It was a surprisingly competitive game in Tralee as South Kerry prepared for their championship quarter-final clash with East Kerry in two weeks time. Moynihan ended the game with two goals while Fitzgerald finished with a tally of 1-02.
Moynihan will be lining out for East Kerry in that game, as he will continue to play with his club Glenflesk and East Kerry in the championship.
