A controlled display helped Longford overcome the challenge of Waterford on a scoreline of 1-16 to 1-09 in their first round SFC qualifier meeting at Walsh Park.

Played in humid conditions, the Deise were in dream land when Karl O'Keeffe sprinted through to score a goal after 80 seconds.

A 24th-minute strike from Paul Barden, with impressive full-back Noel Farrell beginning the move, helped Longford hit the front - they led 1-07 to 1-04 at the interval.

Points from Kevin Smith and Paddy Dowd extended their lead and Waterford's chances were killed off when Gary Hurney missed a certain goal when one-on-one with Longford's Damien Sheridan.
