The former Galway footballer Jack Mahon died this morning.

Mahon played centre half back on the All-Ireland winning Galway team of 1956.

He also earned fame as a writer and sports historian, having written a total of nineteen books about Gaelic football and sport in general.

His ‘History of Gaelic Football’ is considered to be one of the most comprehensive accounts of the story of the game, while his most recent book, called ‘Memories’, was launched at the beginning of the month.

Mahon is the third member of the 1956 All-Ireland winning team to die in 2005, with team-mates Sean Purcell and Mattie McDonagh having passed away earlier this year.
