Tyrone forward Peter Canavan announced his retirement from inter-county football at the winner's reception on RTÉ Television last night.                                       

The Errigal Ciarán man, who was captain of Tyrone when they picked up their first ever All-Ireland in 2003, has suffered from injury in the last few years but was a crucial element of this year's winning team.                                       

The 34-year-old schoolteacher scored a wonderful first half goal against Kerry to edge his side in front going into the break in what was his 50th championship match.

Another well taken point in the closing stages saw off a possible comeback from The Kingdom, as the man they call 'Peter the Great' bid a fitting farewell to the inter-county scene and Croke Park.
