The chairman of the Roscommon County Board, Stephen Banahan, announced his resignation to a meeting of the county board last night.

Banahan cited recent disappointing results on the field and recent controversies involving player discipline and decided that in the best interests of the county he should step aside.

Roscommon lost to Louth in the second round of the qualifiers on Thursday night. Earlier this year manager Tom Carr stepped down as manager after criticism from players. Last month two players were dropped from the county panel for disciplinary reasons.  While earlier this year, it was revealed that the county board was in serious debt.

The audited accounts of the county are due to be discussed at Croke Park on Thursday night.
