Ja Fallon announced as Galway selector

Two-time All-Ireland winner Jarlath 'Ja' Fallon is among the three new selectors Peter Ford has named that will assist him over his initial three-year term with the Tribesmen.

The 1998 Footballer of the Year, who played in the county's two All-Ireland wins in 1998 and 2001, is the most celebrated of the trio, with Annaghdown's Frank Broderick and Ciaran O Fatharta of Leitir Mor also selected.

Fallon still plays for Tuam Stars and is certain to provide a helpful link between Ford and the current squad.

"He knows what makes them tick, having got to know them over the years," said the former Sligo boss. "That's a huge advantage to me in terms of saving me time getting to know them. He will be a step ahead of me for a while."

Broderick also has considerable intercounty experience, having picked up four Connacht medals with Galway. Connemara Gaeltacht man O Fatharta played at left-corner back when the Tribesmen won the All-Ireland minor title in 1976.

Meanwhile, Turloughmore clubman Phelim Murphy has announced his retirement as secretary of the Galway Hurling board. A new official will be appointed at December's convention, after Murphy stepped down from the position he took up in 1982.

Murphy was involved in 18 of Galway's 21 All-Ireland wins. He was a selector in the senior hurlers' triumphs in both 1987 and 1988, and also had a hand in seven Under 21 successes.
