Down All-Ireland winner James McCartan has denied assaulting a Westmeath opponent during a match in May 2003. McCartan, from Banbridge in County Down, is accused of assaulting Kenny Larkin in a challenge game, breaking his jaw in two places.
Mr Larkin told Dublin District Court that the Down player had struck him when the ball was up the field. He said he suffered awful pain, had plates put in his face and a brace on his jaw for six weeks.
The Westmeath fullback denied that earlier in the game he had been aggressive towards Mr McCartan.
