Tipperary football has been rocked by the resignation of manager Andy Shorthall

Tipperary's football manager Andy Shortall and his selectors have resigned just three days ahead of their All-Ireland qualifier against Fermanagh on Saturday.

Shortall took the decision following a row over a club football match involving two of the Tipperary squad scheduled for Wednesday.

The Tipp boss tendered his resignation on Monday, but put his decision on hold pending a board meeting last night. However, no suitable resolution was found and Shortall and his selectors have now stepped down.

The Tipperary County Board Executive confirmed Shortall's decision in a statement which read: "The issue involves a club fixture planned for Wednesday evening involving two members of the Senior Football panel scheduled to play Fermanagh next Saturday."

"The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Tipperary Football Committee Tuesday night where it was requested that the Tipperary County Board would make an official request to Croke Park and to the Fermanagh Board to have next Saturday’s game deferred for one week in light of this situation."

"An acceptable resolution could not be reached and County Board Chairman Donal Shanahan has accepted with regret the resignation of the Senior Football selectors Andy Shortall, Jim Cahill and Mick Byrnes," the statement continued.

"The Tipperary County Board would like to acknowledge the outgoing selectors for their contribution and work with the Tipperary Senior Football panel since taking office in November 2003."
