Kieran McDonald has made a surprise return to the Mayo football team after a year's absence. The Crossmolina clubman lined out at centre forward in a challenge match against Kildare in Leixlip, scoring three points in a 1-16 to 3-10 (Kildare) drawn affair.

McDonald walked out on the Mayo squad at the end of the 2003 NFL campaign after being booed by fans during a game against Fermanagh.

His return to the squad is a massive boost for John Maughan's men, whose Championship challenge ended weakly against Fermanagh last year.
