Cork confirmed as Munster champions

Cork's footballers breathed a sigh of relief this morning as their emphatic Bank of Ireland Munster final replay victory over Tipperary was allowed to stand following a meeting of the Munster Council in Adare last night. The Munster delegates of the GAA convened in the Limerick town to discuss the incident towards the end of Sunday's match when it appeared that The Rebel County had used 21 players, one more than the designated amount.

The introduction of dual star Diarmaid O'Sullivan caused the confusion, but after reviewing the report of match referee Michael Monaghan, the Council ruled that Cork did not infringe any rule for which a penalty is specified, and therefore remain Munster champions.

Tipperary, whose poor performance in the replay was in stark contrast to their heroic display a week earlier, can now turn their attention to Saturday's qualifier with Mayo in Ennis, while Cork go forward into the last eight as one of the four provincial winners.
