UCD bow out while UUJ march on

The quarter finals of the Sigerson Cup got underway this morning and UCC, IT Sligo, Athlone IT and UUJ have all booked their places in the semi-finals.

IT Sligo were up against DCU and, as expected, came through under the guidance of coach Martin McHugh. They defeated the Dublin side by 2-08 to 1-03.

Also in action today were a strong UCC team who, bolstered by a number players who won the Munster Club Championship two years ago, held off a strong challenge from NUI Maynooth to win by 1-08 to 1-06.

There was more heartache for UCD in their quarter-final as they lost 1-09 to 1-06 to Athlone IT. Beaten finalists for the past two years, they were clearly missing Offaly's Ciarán McManus who was controversially sent off against GMIT and found the going tough against Athlone who fielded Mayo's NFL winners James Gill and Trevor Mortimer, and Westmeath's Fergal Wilson.

There were no such problems for holders Jordanstown, they easily overcame Garda College by 2-07 to 1-03.

The semi-finals take place tomorrow with the decider taking place on Saturday at Markievicz Park. Throw-in is 2.30pm.

Semi-final line up:

UUC v UUJ

Athlone IT v Sligo IT.
