All-Ireland football champions Galway dominate the 2001 Vodaphone All Stars team with six players making the cut at the All Star banquet in the Citywest Hotel in Dublin tonight. Beaten All-Ireland finalists Meath are next in line with four players with one each for Dublin, Kerry, Westmeath, Roscommon and Tyrone.
Kieran Fitzgerald, Declan Meehan, Sean Og de Paor, Kevin Walsh, Michael Donnellan and Paraic Joyce made up Galway's six. Declan Meehan, winning his second All Star, went on to claim Footballer of the Year award.
Number nine Rory O'Connell created history when he won Westmeath's first ever football All Star while last year's All-Ireland champions, Kerry, could only claim one All Star courtesy of Johnny Crowley in the left full forward position. Ollie Murphy, Cormac Sullivan, Darren Faye and Evan Kelly claimed the honours for Meath with Coman Goggins (Dublin), Stephen O'Neill (Tyrone) and Francie Grehan (Roscommon) making up the remainder of the All Star team for 2001.
Tipperary's captain, Tommy Dunne, won Hurler of the Year award. The Young Player of the Year accolades went to Eoin Kelly of Tipperary and Tyrone's Cormac McAnallen.
