Kerrigan takes Cavan job

Former Meath All-Ireland winning forward Mattie Kerrigan has been appointed manager of the Cavan Senior County Football team following a meeting of the County Board on Monday night. Kerrigan, who helped his native county to All-Ireland success in 1967, replaces Val Andrews at the helm of last year's beaten Ulster finalists, and will face a Championship opener against Donegal in May's preliminary round.

His appointment will come as no surprise to supporters of the Breffni Blues, having temporarily held the position following Martin McHugh's resignation before stepping down because of personal commitments. Kerrigan guided Westmeath to a NFL semi-final in 1994, while he has also excelled as manager of the Leinster provincial team, and has extensive experience in club management.

Meanwhile, Cavan, Monaghan and Wexford have become the latest counties to vote in favour of the abolition of Rule 21.
