Dublin's longest serving player, Paul Curran, has told RTÉ he is quitting inter-county football in the wake of Tommy Carr's sacking as Dublin manager at a meeting of the county board at Parnell Park last night. Carr was supported last night by Dublin captain Dessie Farrell who made a passionate plea for Carr to be re-appointed, before the deciding vote was cast by county chairman John Bailey after a split vote amongst the 93 delegates failed to resolve the issue.
The meeting was adjourned for 10 minutes when the Dublin delegates were split 46-46 with one abstention. Following a meeting of the eight-man Management Committee, Bailey announced that he would be giving his casting vote against Carr.
It had been agreed to hold a secret ballot to decide the fate of Carr and his selectors Richie Crean, John O'Leary and Dom Twomey following last Wednesday's divided 4-3 vote against Carr seeing out the remaining year of his current two-year contract.
After Bailey announced that Carr and his selectors had been removed, Bailey thanked them for all the good work they had done for Dublin football. "I want to put on the record my appreciation of all the efforts that Tom Carr and his selectors have made over the last four years," Bailey said.
