Although it never reached the same excitement level as last week's drawn match at Wexford, tonight's replay produced some determined football from Westmeath who took control of this second All-Ireland Football qualifier as it wore on.
Neither side displayed quality football with both Westmeath and Wexford relying on their free-takers early on. Although Wexford had the wind in their favour in the opening period and managed to score a goal through Mattie Ford after the first 15 minutes, they still found themselves trailing their opponents by a point 0-08 to 1-04 at half-time.
Westmeath got their second half off to the best possible start with a goal from Ger Heavin. However, poor shooting meant they failed to extend their advantage and it provided Wexford with an ideal opportunity to take control. But during this barren spell for Westmeath, their opponents could only point twice and when Des Dolan shot over, it sparked a period of dominance for the home side which earned them a deserved 1-16 to 1-08 victory in the end.
