Savage doubtful for remainder of Championship

The injury jinx which has plagued Galway football over the past 12 months has struck again with corner-forward Derek Savage the latest victicm. Savage suffered a freak knee injury in training last Saturday and following hosptial tests and a meeting with a knee specialist yesterday, it was revealed that he could miss the rest of this year's Championship.

Galway manager John O'Mahony confirmed that the injury is very serious although its true extent will not be revealed until the test results are back. However, there is a strong chance that Savage may not play a part in Galway's All-Ireland campaign this year. "We've managed to cope last year and we have to do it again," admitted O'Mahony to The Star newspaper.

Joining Savage on the injury list is Paul Clancy, who will be out for a further six weeks with his leg injury, while Jarlath Fallon, Kevin Walsh and Gary Fahy are all just returning to full match fitness following long lay-offs through injury.
