Mayo win to set up all-Connacht final

Mayo play Galway in the final of the Allianz Football League Division One next Sunday after a win over Roscommon while Cork meet Westmeath in the Division Two final after victories over Kildare and Down respectively.

Mayo edged a 0-16 to 1-10 victory over Roscommon at Markievicz Park this afternoon. Points from Clifford McDonald and Gerry Lohan and a goal and 2 points from Stephen Lohan gave Roscommon a two point advantage at half-time. In the 58th minute however, Mayo closed the gap to six points and only one point in the closing 20 minutes seven points in a row in the space of ten minutes to eventually open and keep a three-point gap.

In Division 2 Cork play Westmeath in the final after Cork escaped with a one-point victory, 1-12 to 1-11, over Kildare this afternoon at Nenagh. A goal from Owen Sexton and three points from Phillip Clifford added to Cork’s 1-08 to 0-06 lead at the break. In the second half Michael Cronin, Aidan Dorgan and Philip Clifford scored points for Cork but their dominance soon ended when Dermot Early and Ronan Sweeney started to win the battle at mid-field. Time ran out for Kildare however, and a point and a goal from sub Karl O’Dwyer failed to claw back Cork.

Meanwhile, Westmeath produced an impressive display over Down at Navan to win comfortably 0-20 to 2-05 this afternoon. A strong performance from Westmeath’s forward-line gave the team a 0-11 to 1-04 advantage at half-time with points from Shane Ward and a goal and a point from Michael Walsh keeping Down in contention. Westmeath dominated throughout the second half with Down only scoring a goal, the second from Walsh, and one point. In all seven players scored for Westmeath including one point from Damien Gavin, Cathal Keane and Michael Ennis, two points each for Paul Conway and Dessie Dolan, three for Fergal Wills, four for Ger Heavin, six points from frees from Joe Fallon.
