The GAA has voted to radically alter the structure of the All Ireland Senior football championship. The new structure will be introduced for a trial period of two years, and includes the implementation of a loser’s group, which will be run on knockout basis, in conjunction with the current provincial championships.
The new format will allow for the introduction of All Ireland quarter-finals, and will ultimately double the number of championship games played. The new championship keeps the traditional provincial basis, but ensures that every county will play at least two championship games. Plans to introduce new drug tests were also passed at the congress.
