The Republic of Ireland's first-ever game in a Women's World Cup ended in a frustrating, but battling, 1-0 loss to co-hosts Australia.

With Vera Pauw's defence standing firm and some impressive cameos from the bench, here is how the players rate.

Courtney Brosnan - 7

The goalkeeper's positioning was perfect, and she could do nothing about the penalty that was conceded at the start of the second half. Brosnan was the foundation of the Irish defence that stopped Australia from creating through the middle.

Louise Quinn - 8

The Irish centurion headed away and dealt with everything that was sent into the box by Australia. Quinn, one of the most consistent performers ever to put on an Irish jersey, played in front of 70,000 people with her distinct sense of calmness.

Niamh Fahey was a rock at the back

Niamh Fahey - 8

The Galway born defender made a number of interceptions, covered space and used her body well to win Ireland a free-out inside their own penalty area at the start of the second half. Fahey, a rock in the defence in the Hampden qualifier, was her typically diligent and impressive.

Megan Connolly - 7

The versatile Corkwoman was deployed in defence against the Aussies. She intercepted passes and delivered set pieces with inch perfect precision. Connolly went close to equalising with a late free-kick.

Ruesha Littlejohn - 7

The midfielder was a ball of energy for Ireland and she did not stop running for the 90 minutes she was on the pitch. Littlejohn was disruptive and broke up play with expert tackling.

Denise O'Sullivan (L) looked fit after her injury scare

Denise O’Sullivan - 8

If the midfielder was having a hangover from the injury picked up last week against Colombia, it never showed as she covered every blade of grass. O’Sullivan operated as a number six and number ten, with her defensive duties a big reason why Ireland frustrated the Australians.

Katie McCabe - 8

The captain announced herself on this stage with another stellar performance, almost equalising with nearly the last kick of the game. The biggest thing on the day was her awareness as she got forward and retreated without leaving space behind her.

Heather Payne - 7

The 23-year-old took control of the game for Ireland by jumping in and blocking a cross in just the third minute. Payne was wherever she was needed on the day for Ireland.

Sinead Farrelly had a quiet outing

Sinead Farrelly - 6

The midfielder’s lack of game time had no effect on her 60 minutes as she was everywhere for Ireland. Farrelly was tiring at the second half, which raises the questions of her starting future games for Ireland.

Kyra Carusa - 7

An engine for her country, and she continually scrapped well for possession, stripping the hosts of the ball. The London City Lionesses player was easily able for the occasion.

Marissa Sheva - 6

A good performance in a pressure cooker-like environment, but it is overshadowed by one moment that led to the Australian penalty.

Abbie Larkin - 8

The catalyst. The teenager, who plays her club football with Shamrock Rovers, injected a new sense of life into the Irish forward line and this nearly forced the equaliser.

Lucy Quinn - 7

A solid performance that was capped off by winning a free-kick that Connolly almost equalised with.

Abbie Larkin made a great cameo from the bench

Izzy Atkinson - 6

She was only on the pitch a matter of minutes, but Atkinson made sure Ireland kept Australia under pressure in the time that was left to play.
