Australia's captain and star striker Sam Kerr has been ruled out of the World Cup opener against the Republic of Ireland in Sydney.

Kerr picked up a calf injury in training on the eve of the huge showdown at the Accor Stadium. She will also miss the Matildas' next game against Nigeria.

It's a massive blow to boss Tony Gustavsson but he does have depth in his squad.

Mary Fowler - the daughter of a Dubliner - starts in Kerr's place. She came off the bench to score the winner against France last Friday.

Clare Hunt partners Manchester City's Alanna Kenedy in the heart of defence, with Ellie Carpenter and Steph Catley the two marauding full-backs. Hayley Raso and Cortnee Vine are on either wing with Katrina Gorry and Kyra Cooney-Cross anchoring midfield.

Up front, Fowler dovetails with Caitlin Foord to form a dangerous strike force.

There's no surprises in the Irish 11.

As expected, Denise O'Sullivan starts. The Cork midfielder has proven she's fit enough to take her place in the engine room alongside Sinead Farrelly and Ruesha Littlejohn.

Vera Pauw had said she had "no secrets" in the build-up to this game and manager has stayed true to her word. There are no curveballs in the first XI, with Courtney Brosnan behind a back three of Niamh Fahey, Louise Quinn and Megan Connolly.

Heather Payne and captain Katie McCabe are the two wing-backs with Marissa Sheva playing off striker Kyra Carusa.

Edina Alvez from Brazil is the referee for today's encounter. It's the first time Ireland have had a Brazilian official in charge of a senior international since Italia 90, when Jose Roberto Wright was the man in the middle for a famous penalty shootout victory against Romania in Genoa.

Kick-off in Sydney is at 11am Irish time, and is live on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player.
