World Cup Group D preview

England are expected to qualify top of the group
England are expected to qualify top of the group

England

FIFA Ranking: 4

Nickname: The Lionesses

Coach: Sarina Wiegman

How they qualified: As expected qualification was a doddle for England, winning all 10 matches and scoring 80 goals. They didn't concede a goal along the way. As such they've been playing more difficult friendlies in order to prepare and had a couple of frustrating draws with Portugal and Canada.

Previous tournaments: This will be their sixth World Cup. Two quarter-final exits were followed by semi-finals losses. This is seen as a chance for a golden generation to make a breakthrough to the final.

Prospects: England are European champions and vastly experienced. The squad has been freshened up on the back of retirements after the Euros. The group stage should be a doddle. The quarter-finals is when things will ramp up. There's no doubt they are a major contender.

China

FIFA Ranking: 14

Nickname: The Steel Roses

Coach: Shui Qingxia

How they qualified: Taiwan, Iran and Vietnam were swatted aside with ease as China progressed with a 100% record. Qualification in Asia is routine for the major nations.

Previous tournaments: This will be a seventh edition for China. They have always qualified through the groups but last year was their worst showing, getting knocked out in the Round of 16.

Prospects: China will fancy their chances of finishing runner-up in their group, but know their opening clash with Denmark is their key fixture. Chine played Ireland in a friendly in February in Spain and secured a 0-0 draw. They're struggled in front of goal against better teams.

Denmark

FIFA Ranking: 13

Nickname: De rød-hvide

Coach: Lars Søndergaard

How they qualified: A perfect record for the Danes as well with eight wins in as many matches. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azerbaijan provided the most difficult opposition.

Previous tournaments: It's a fifth appearance for the Danes with hopes for a genuine breakthrough. Not since 1995 have they reached a knockout game. They missed out on the last three competitions so this tournament - and the way they got there - has women's football high in the headlines in Denmark.

Prospects: Again the big game in this group is China v Denmark. It's tough to pick how it'll go. A draw would leave it coming down to results against Haiti and trying to take a point off England. Pernille Harder is the star player and one to watch in the tournament.

Haiti

FIFA Ranking: 53

Nickname: Les Grenadieres

Coach: Nicolas Delepine

How they qualified: Haiti finished third in Group A of last year's CONCACAF W Championship, earning a spot in the World Cup inter-confederation play-off tournament. They beat Senegal 4-0 and Chile 2-1 to secure their World Cup berth.

Previous tournaments: Haiti have never previously played at the World Cup. Their best finish in a CONCACAF W Championship was fourth in 1991.

Prospects: Haiti will do well to avoid three straight defeats at the World Cup, where they face the daunting challenge of being drawn in Group D with European champions England, Asian champions China and Denmark.
