World Cup Group B preview

Ireland begin their World Cup odyssey against Australia
Ireland begin their World Cup odyssey against Australia

Ireland

FIFA ranking: 22

Nickname: The Girls in Green

Coach: Vera Pauw

How they qualified: Ireland earned five wins in eight games, including a record 11-0 victory over Georgia, in Group A of the UEFA qualifiers, finishing second behind Sweden to enter the playoffs. In the playoffs, they beat Scotland 1-0 to seal qualification for their first major tournament.

Previous tournaments: Ireland have never previously played at the World Cup or the European Championship.

Prospects:
Ireland have been drawn in a tough Group B featuring hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada and 11-time Women's Africa Cup of Nations winners Nigeria. Vera Pauw's side face an uphill task in reaching the knockout stage, but a 1-1 draw with third-ranked Sweden in qualifying will give them cause for optimism.

Australia

FIFA ranking: 10

Nickname: The Matildas

Coach: Tony Gustavsson

How they qualified: As co-hosts the Aussies did not have to qualify. They come into the tournament on the back of some decent form having defeated Jamaica, Spain and Czech Republic at the Cup of Nations in February. They then beat European champions England 2-0 in a friendly, ending a 30-match unbeaten run for Sarina Wiegman's side.

Previous tournaments: Australia have reached all bar one of the finals, missing out on the opening instalment in 1991. Since 2007, they have got past the group stage but have only won one knockout game, when beating Brazil 1-0 in the round of 16 in 2015. At the same stage four years ago, the Matildas lost a penalty shootout to Norway.

Prospects:
As hosts Australia will again be expected to make the knockout stages and begin with a game against Vera Pauw's Ireland, where a capacity crowd of 80,000 will be in situ.

Much focus will be on captain Sam Kerr, with the Chelsea player hitting 29 goals across all competions as the Londoners claimed last season's Super League title. Kerr, who is set for a fourth World Cup and is Australia's all-time leading scorer, has found the net 63 times for her country.

Coach Gustavsson welcomes back key players from injury, namely Kayah Simon, Alana Kennedy and Chloe Logarzo, an added boost for a side who will expect to go deep in the tournament.

Canada

Fifa ranking: 7 (as of 9 June)

Nickname:

Manager: Bev Priestman

How the qualified: Canada secured a top-two finish in CONCACAF qualifying, beating Panama 1-0 to secure their ticket Down Under. It also meant they qualified for the Paris Olympics, where they will be looking to defend the title they won in Tokyo.

Previous tournaments: Like Australia, Canada missed out on the opening tournament, but have been ever-present since and hosted the event in 2015. Their best finish of fourth came in 2003 and they made it to the round of 16 four years ago.

Prospects:
The expectation is that Priestman's side can emerge from the group but doubts exist as to how far they'll go thereafter. Their form heading into group has been patchy and includes a 3-0 loss to Japan in the SheBelieves Cup. The Chelsea trio of Kadeisha Buchana, Ashley Lawrence and Jessie Fleming, along with 40-year-old attacker Christine Sinclair, will be names to watch. The latter, now 40, has scored 190 goals for her country.

Nigeria

Fifa ranking: 40

Nickname: Super Falcons

Manager: Randy Waldrum

How they qualified: A fourth-place finish in the last year's African Cup of Nations saw Nigeria book their ticket.

Previous tournaments: Nigeria have played in every finals tournament, with their best finish coming in 1999 where they reached the quarter-finals.

Prospects:
The lowest ranked team in the group have found some form of late, winning three games on the spin, this after a run of seven consecutive defeats during the second half of 2022. Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala is the player to watch and has found the net 83 times in 89 appearances. She did pick up a hamstring injury in May while playing for her club, though she is confident that she'll be fit for the group opener against Canada on 21 July.
