Irish team manager Rodrigo Pessoa believes Cian O'Connor is in with a great chance of winning a medal at the FEI World Equestrian Games in North Carolina.

O'Connor sits in sixth place overall in the individual event after finishing with just one fence down in Friday's third round of jumping.

With Saturday deemed a rest day, the top 25 riders are poised to compete in Sunday's final.

Germany's Simone Blum is sitting in the gold medal position ahead of Max Kuhner of Austria and Martin Fuchs of Switzerland but the Irish boss reckons that O'Connor is well placed to break into the podium places on the final day.

"Cian is in a very good place individually," Pessoa said.

"This is very demanding jumping, so we will see how the horse is in the morning and if everything is okay and he can jump two clear rounds on Sunday, he will have a great chance of a medal."

On Friday in North Carolina, the Irish team of Shane Sweetnam, Shane Breen, Paul O'Shea and O'Connor finished in seventh in the team event, one spot outside the qualifying places for the Tokyo Olympics.

The book is not yet closed on that, however, with Ireland still having two more chances to book a place in Tokyo either via the 2019 European Championships or the FEI Nations Cup final in Barcelona.
