Wessel Nijman defeated Meath's Keane Barry on his way to a third ranking title of the year with victory in the Players Championship Eight in Leicester.

Barry reached the semi-finals of Players Championship 7 by defeating 2023 world champion Michael Smith and current Premier League player Stephen Bunting, but could not halt Nijman's charge.

The Dutchman triumphed 8-4 at the Mattioli Arena over Joe Cullen, despite the Englishman scoring heavily, to claim the £15,000 top prize and another crown to go with his victory at Players Championship Two and a maiden European Tour triumph in Goettingen earlier this month.

Nijman saw off Dominik Gruellich, Thomas Lovely, Tytus Kanik, the aforementioned Barry and Dave Chisnall before surviving two match darts in his semi-final clash with compatriot Kevin Doets to set up his showdown with Cullen.

In the final, he landed finishes of 96 and 121 as he took a 5-3 lead despite a barrage of maximums from his opponent, who had earlier dispensed with Samuel Price, former world champion Michael Smith, Damon Heta, Tom Sykes, Charlie Manby and Sebastian Bialecki.

However, Cullen had nine darts at a double in the 11th leg and having failed to take his chance, saw his opponent close out the match in some comfort.
