Michael van Gerwen put in a blistering display to win the German Darts Grand Prix, where he hit a nine-darter before going on to beat Gian van Veen 8-5 in the final.

A tight tussle between the Dutch pair in the tournament's showpiece saw the score level at 5-5, but Van Gerwen pulled ahead by winning three straight legs to clinch victory in Munich.

The title is Van Gerwen’s fourth German Darts Grand Prix crown and his 38th European Tour title.

Luke Littler was knocked out in the semi-finals after falling to a 7-4 defeat against finalist Van Veen.

Littler beat Joe Cullen in the last-16 round on the final day of the competition, scoring a 170 break on his way to a 6-3 victory and overcame a close encounter with Peter Wright in the quarter-finals, winning 6-5.

Van Gerwen’s route to the final saw him throw a nine-darter during his last-16 clash with Ryan Searle, where he earned a 6-1 victory and he then defeated Ryan Joyce 6-4 later in the evening.

The Dutchman secured his spot in the final with a 7-2 win over Josh Rock, where he averaged 104.37 throughout the contest.
