Ritchie Edhouse made a winning start in defence of his European Trophy title by beating Kevin Doets 6-2 in the opening round in Gottingen.

Edhouse sealed his win with an 11-dart finish, while Ricky Evans held his nerve to oust five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld 6-4.

Home favourite Martin Schindler booked a second-round match against world number five Jonny Clayton by beating Adam Hunt 6-2 and another German, Ricardo Pietreczko, will face Michael Smith after defeating compatriot Danile Klose 6-3.

Ryan Joyce and Ryan Searle both progressed after white-washing respective opponents Joe Cullen and German qualifier Laurin Welk and Nico Springer won 6-4 against Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney.

Ross Smith averaged 106.44 as he thrashed Michael Unterbuchner 6-1 and Croatia's Boris Krcmar upset Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-4.

Belgium's Mike De Decker and the Netherlands' Gian van Veen both progressed to the second round and there were also first-round wins for Luke Woodhouse, Jermaine Wattimena, Andrew Gilding, Cameron Menzies and Wessel Nijman.
