Robyn Byrne says the pressure is off as she prepares to make her Women's World Matchplay debut on Sunday afternoon.

The Dubliner takes on Wales' Rhian O'Sullivan having sealed her qualification by finishing fourth in the PDC's Women's Series.

The 26-year-old has represented Ireland at senior level since 2015 and was a Youth World Master winner in 2014. She became the first Irish winner of a Women's Series Event when beating the field at Milton Keynes in May.

But the second renewal of the Women's World Matchplay, which takes place at the Winter Gardens where the men's version is currently taking place, will showcase the Blanchardstown thrower's talents to a huge audience with the tournament being broadcast live on Sky Sports.

As well as a £10,000 top prize, the winner of the event earns a spot at the Grand Slam of Darts in November and a place at the World Championship in Alexandra Palace at Christmas.

"I'm not really feeling any pressure," Byrne told RTE Sport.

"I think the pressure was qualifying to get there, now I can relax, enjoy it and play darts. My attitude is, 'you're there, you've done the hard work, go and enjoy the experience, play your best darts and show everyone what you can do'.

"I know I can do it and everyone else knows I can do it and it's just about getting up there and performing."

Having just missed out on a place in the inaugural event last year, where fellow Dubliner Katie Sheldon took part, Byrne puts her recent good form down to an improved mindset.

"It felt amazing [to qualify] especially because l just missed out last year so to put in the performances every weekend, get into finals and actually win them is great to know that you are good enough to be in with that group of ladies," she said.

"The standard was always there and I'd always show flashes but I've definitely gained a lot of consistency over the last few months and my attitude has changed a lot.

"I used to give out to myself a lot and drop the head as soon as something went wrong. I have more determination and a better attitude now.

"I signed with Mission darts in March and then made me a new dart and I won the first event I played with them so it's so good to have them onboard.

"I've the right people around me at the minute, the right sponsor, the right team. A lot of that helps, if you've the right people around you you can relax and play good darts."

Queen of the Palace Fallon Sherrock (above) is the defending champion but it's fellow English dartist Beau Greaves who has taken the Women's Series by storm over the last 12 months.

The 19-year-old has won 15 of the last 20 events and between August last year and February 2023 won a barely believable 70 matches in a row.

"I've never seen a woman to play at her level with that consistency," said Byrne.

"I think she won the first 11 events she played in, that's phenomenal.

"Fallon, Lisa [Ashton], myself, everyone in that top eight can do it for one game, for two games, but doing it for 20 or 30 games in a row, that's what she does and that's why she is where she is.

"She's only 19 and she's probably an inspiration to a lot of players.

"I'm eight years older but she inspires me. I want to do what Beau does. Her standard is phenomenal. The way she plays the game is fantastic."

If Byrne is to get a shot at Greaves (above), she'll have to overcome nemesis O'Sullivan in the quarter-final.

"Absolutely horrific, to be honest," laughs Byrne when asked about her record against O'Sullivan, one place behind on the order of merit.

"I don't think I've ever beaten her. She beat me to qualify for the World Championship, the Six Nations final, the World Trophy.

"She beat me in a last leg decider at the Irish Open semi-final. We seem to meet each other in lots of important games but I'm getting closer all the time.

"I'm hoping that one on telly is the one everyone remembers."
