Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland off to winning start at World Cup of Darts

The Republic of Ireland are through to the second round of the World Cup of Darts after a convincing 5-2 win over Canada in Frankfurt.

Steve Lennon led the way for the 2019 finalists, while Willie O'Connor hit the winning double to see of the challenge of Matt Campbell and Jeff Smith.

Ireland will face the Netherlands in the next round after they thumped Brazil 5-0.

"It was tough before I made it [extra] tough," said Limerick’s O’Connor, who started off slowly.

"If [Steve] keeps doing what he’s doing and I start doing what I can do there are very few that can stop us."

Northern Ireland, meanwhile, scrapped to a 5-3 victory over Gibraltar.

Derry's Daryl Gurney hit a 135 outshot in the seventh leg to dampen a spirited performance from Justin Hewitt and Craig Galliano, while Fermanagh’s Brendan Dolan cleaned up 60 in the next leg.

That win sets up a second-round clash with New Zealand duo Ben Robb and Warren Parry, who beat Switzerland.

2020 World Cup winners Wales were 5-2 victors against the Philippines to book a second-round tie with Austria, who defeated Finland 5-3.

Hosts Germany edged Spain 5-4 and will next face Denmark. who scored a 5-2 win over Singapore.
