Pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard won the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday, prevailing in a steep climb to the finish line with a final push to take the red jersey from Jasper Philipsen.

The two-time Tour de France champion shook off a crash 35km from the finish in the 157km ride from Alba to Limone Piemonte, and followed Lidl-Trek's Giulio Ciccone before overtaking the Italian in the final seconds.

Irish cyclists Archie Ryan and Eddie Dunbar came through the stage unscathed.

Roundwood native Ryan, riding for the EF Education-Easypost team, finished 58 seconds down, with Team Jayco-AlUla's Dunbar a further 12 seconds back.

Ryan is 54th overall with Dunbar in 70th place.

Vingegaard holds a four-second lead in the red jery from Ciccone, with David Gaudu in third, whose team-mate Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet withdrew from the race following a crash during a descent in wet conditions.
