Egan Bernal has set his sights on the Tour de France this year after signing a new five-year contract to remain with the Ineos Grenadiers.

The 2019 Tour winner abandoned the 2020 edition with a back problem in the third week and then sat out last year's race after securing the Giro d'Italia title, but he wants to return this summer and challenge Tadej Pogacar's recent dominance.

"I really want to go back to the Tour," the Colombian said. "I skipped last year because of the Giro, but it feels like it's been a long time since I was at the Tour. So I am really excited about this year."

Bernal will do so in Ineos colours, having renewed with the team that first elevated him to the WorldTour ranks in 2018.

"It's really important, signing this new contract," he added. "I am really happy in this team. I am really proud of the team, the staff, and I'm signing now for my most important years. It will be my best years and I want to spend this time with this team."
