Mark Cavendish will stay with Deceuninck-QuickStep for one more season, the Belgian team have announced.

The Manxman rejoined the team at the start of 2021 for his second spell with the outfit, during which time he won four stages at the Tour de France and the green jersey.

However, in November, Cavendish crashed during the Ghent Six Day track event, suffering a collapsed lung and two broken ribs.

He spent the night in the intensive care unit of a Belgian hospital after leaving the velodrome on a stretcher and it remains to be seen whether he will have healed enough to be fully fit for the start of next season.

"I am incredibly proud and happy to have agreed a new deal with Deceuninck-QuickStep," Cavendish said.

"One year ago, when I came to the team, I did not hide my admiration for what this team does and how happy I was to be back here.

"I knew from my first time here that this squad has a unique family feeling and it is a culture that remains to this day.

"The last 12 months have been phenomenal and the support that I have had from the team and the staff has made me very emotional at times.

"I am really looking forward to making some more special memories together over the next 12 months."
