Patrick Konrad soloed to victory on stage 16 of the Tour de France in Saint-Gaudens.

The Austrian champion attacked out of a breakaway on the Col de Portet-d'Aspet, the penultimate climb of the 169-kilometre stage from Pas de la Case.

And Konrad had the power to hold off a counter-attack from David Gaudu and Sonny Colbrelli to deliver a second stage win of this year's Tour for Bora-Hansgrohe.

It was Konrad's first Tour stage win, and first professional victory outside of his two Austrian titles.

The stage became a battle of two breakaways after the intermediate sprint, with Konrad attacking out of the front group with a little over 35km to go, knowing he could not afford for the chasing pack - including Colbrelli and Michael Matthews - to get back considering their superior sprinting abilities.

Konrad ultimately took victory by 41 seconds from Colbrelli, with Matthews coming in third to take a bite out of Mark Cavendish's lead in the points classification.

Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey as the group of favourites crossed the line almost 14 minutes later, with no significant changes at the top of the general classification.

It was another relatively stress-free day for the Slovenian as the race resumed following Monday's rest day - with the damp conditions on the treacherous descent of the Portet-d'Aspet the main concern for the peloton.

Pogacar continues to lead by five minutes and 18 seconds from Rigoberto Uran going into Wednesday's 178km stage to a summit finish on the Col du Portet.
