Ireland's Sam Bennett outsprinted his Volta ao Algarve rivals to claim the third stage of the race from Faro to Tavira as Ethan Hayter retained the overall race lead.
Bennett reprised his opening day victory as the Deceuninck-QuickStep rider was easily the class of the sprinting field in Tavira at the end of the 203km stage, beating Danny van Poppel to the line as Bennett's own lead-out man Michael Morkov took third.
"I’m absolutely delighted," Bennett said. "The team again were absolutely fantastic. I found it difficult because of the heat and thought I didn’t have the legs so I was quite surprised I was able to do it today."
Hayter, who took the yellow jersey with his stage victory 24 hours earlier in Foia, finished safely in the pack to retain his overall lead for the Ineos Grenadiers, albeit on the same time as Joao Rodrigues and Jonathan Lastra.
But Hayter will hope to open up his advantage in Saturday’s time trial in Lagoa.
"Fingers crossed," the 22-year-old Englishman said. "The guys around me are more climbers than time triallists so it should play into my hands, hopefully."
